The process of research generally consists of three parts: Documentation, Discovery and Interpretation. Each of these steps are a necessary and critical part of the research process. Documentation includes identifying the problem or question, designing the appropriate study and collecting dependable data using the proper instruments. Discovery involves observing and analysing the data collected to find out what is being observed. This can involve rewriting the original hypothesis multiple times, until a result is discovered that is able to explain the observations.
In order for research to be effective, it must be conducted in an objective manner. This means that personal bias and subjective judgements must be eliminated from the research process. Furthermore, the results of the research should be documented in an unbiased way and must be clearly presented for other researchers to use as references. Research should also be done with the aim to maximise its impact on society. This can be done in many ways, including sharing research findings, involving individuals and communities, as well as influencing policy-making.
