Climate change is a global issue that changes weather patterns and contributes to an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters. One of the most significant impacts is an increase in the number of natural disasters such as floods, droughts and storms. Research shows that rising global temperatures are affecting the hydrological cycle, leading to changes in rainfall patterns and increased risk of disasters. Flooding is one of the disasters most directly related to climate change. In many areas, the intensity of rainfall has increased, triggering flash floods. For example, areas that previously did not frequently experience flooding are now becoming vulnerable due to increased extreme rainfall. Data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) notes that the frequency of global flooding has increased in the last decade, with a more severe impact on developing countries. Meanwhile, droughts have also become more common due to climate change. Increasing temperatures cause faster water evaporation, while irregular rainfall patterns result in longer dry seasons. This is for example the case in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, where drought has threatened food security and public health. According to the Global Climate Change Report 2022, around 1.5 billion people worldwide are experiencing the effects of prolonged drought. Tropical storms or cyclones are also getting stronger due to climate change. Rising ocean temperatures provide additional energy for storms to grow and develop. This can be seen in more frequent and stronger hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific. A study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) noted that powerful hurricanes such as Hurricanes Harvey and Maria have destroyed infrastructure in affected areas, increasing economic losses and social impacts. Climate change has wider impacts, including population migration. The many disasters that occur due to climate change encourage many people to move from areas that are no longer safe to places that are more comfortable. This phenomenon can cause social tension and conflict in new areas, given limited resources. Health risks are also increasing as a result of natural disasters triggered by climate change. Longer summers create ideal conditions for the spread of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever. Recent research shows that populations affected by disasters are more vulnerable to infectious diseases, which worsens the public health situation. Facing the increasingly real impacts of climate change, it is important for countries around the world to take mitigation steps. Policy and infrastructure adjustments are needed to minimize impacts and increase community resilience to disasters. This includes developing environmentally friendly technologies, replanting forests, and investing in early warning systems for natural disasters. These steps can not only slow the rate of climate change, but also protect ecosystems and human life from increasingly frequent disasters. The introduction of adaptation strategies is an important step to ensure a safer future amidst critical environmental challenges.
