The Basics of Research

Research is a systematic process of gathering and studying information to explore new ideas or understand things we already know. It requires careful thinking and persistence to reach meaningful conclusions.

It is also a complex and lengthy process, so it is important to consider the purpose of your study carefully from the beginning. Research is a cumulative process, with each stage building upon and improving earlier phases. For example, the data collection and analysis phase of your study will help you form a more solid hypothesis for your experiment, which in turn will make future studies faster and more accurate.

A good research study must collect accurate information systematically, use logic to analyze the collected data and find insights, and thoroughly check the collected data for accuracy. It must also be designed around a specific question or hypothesis and build upon scientifically accepted fundamentals.

The research process generally starts with a literature review which may identify flaws in previous studies or gaps that need to be filled. This then engenders a research question or hypothesis that will lead to the data collection and analysis phase of your study.

There are many different types of research methods that can be used to answer a particular question or hypothesis, including experiments, surveys, fieldwork and observations, qualitative interviews, and quantitative analyses. The research method you choose will depend on your topic and the type of data you need to gather. You may also be able to utilize pre-existing data that has been collected by other researchers, saving time and resources.
